Yes, SafetyWing is a real insurance product, not a scam. Its Essential plan is underwritten by SafetyWing Insurance I.I., a Puerto Rico-domiciled international insurer. The health part of its Complete plan is underwritten by VUMI Group I.I. But Essential is emergency-focused travel medical cover, not full health insurance, and most complaints concern claims paperwork and pre-existing condition denials.

What SafetyWing is: Essential vs Complete
SafetyWing sells “Nomad Insurance” in two tiers. Essential is travel medical insurance, bought even while abroad and renewing every 4 weeks. Complete is marketed as full health insurance with travel protections.
| Plan | What it’s for | Price from (checked 6 Oct 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SafetyWing Essential | Emergency and travel medical cover | $62.72 per 4 weeks (ages 18–39) | $250,000 overall limit. Evacuation $100,000 lifetime maximum. Up to 30 days of medical cover in your home country. US cover costs extra. Excludes pre-existing conditions, maternity care and cancer treatment |
| SafetyWing Complete | Health insurance plus travel protections | $177.50 a month (ages 18–39). Paying annually saves 10% | $1.5m annual maximum. Outpatient limit $5,000. 10 mental health visits a year. Emergency dental up to $1,000. Maternity up to $2,500 after a 10-month waiting period. No cover restrictions at home. Sign up until age 64, then renewable indefinitely |
| Complete add-on: US, Hong Kong, Singapore | Cover in high-cost countries | Price not shown on the pages we checked | Up to 6 months of cover in the US, or year-round cover if you live in Hong Kong or Singapore |
Other ages: only the 18–39 price is shown; other bands (under 18, 40–49, 50–59, 60–64 for Complete) are quoted through the calculator.
Deductible and Essential age limit: neither is stated on the official pages we checked. Third-party reviews quote figures we could not confirm, so check the policy wording before buying.
Who actually insures it
SafetyWing’s own disclosure names three entities. SafetyWing Insurance I.I., a Puerto Rico-domiciled international insurer, underwrites products including Essential. SafetyWing (Managing General Agent), Ltd, registered in the Turks and Caicos, is the producer and plan administrator. SafetyWing Benefits, LLC (Puerto Rico) handles some administrative services. The health portion of Complete is underwritten by VUMI Group I.I., also Puerto Rico-domiciled. The current official pages we checked do not mention Tokio Marine HCC, which some older articles name.
What it is not
- Not full health insurance on Essential. It is for emergencies abroad, excludes cancer treatment and maternity, and limits home-country cover to 30 days.
- No pre-existing conditions. SafetyWing defines a pre-existing condition as any illness or injury “for which you received treatment or diagnosis in your life”, plus anything with symptoms in the last two years. If you have a chronic condition, read Expat health insurance for digital nomads: SafetyWing vs Genki vs Cigna and more on underwritten international health plans.
- Not automatic US cover. It is an extra on both tiers.
Claims and common complaints
On Essential, SafetyWing says you “tell us what happened and get your money back within a few days”. On Complete, it says “claims are reimbursed in 21 days or less”. Both tiers come with 24/7 human support.
On Trustpilot (checked 6 October 2026), SafetyWing scored 4.3 out of 5 from 4,153 reviews, and it says it has replied to 95% of negative reviews. The pattern is polarised: 74% of reviews are 5-star and 16% are 1-star.
- Positive themes: quick sign-up, buying while abroad, responsive support, smooth small claims.
- Negative themes: heavy document requests (sometimes for paperwork that doesn’t exist locally), claims taking months, pre-existing condition denials, chatbot-first support for complex cases, and poor communication between departments.
These are review themes, not statistics. Keep itemised invoices, a diagnosis report and proof of payment for every visit, and call the assistance line before planned treatment.

How to choose
- Pick Essential if you are young and healthy and want emergency cover while you move between countries.
- Pick Complete or an underwritten international health plan (IPMI) if you want routine care, cancer cover or a stable base. Compare Complete’s $1.5m cap and $5,000 outpatient limit against IPMI quotes.
- Avoid both if you have a condition you need treated. Read the pre-existing exclusion first.
- For visas, check the destination’s minimum cover rules; see Digital nomad visa countries: which countries have one (2026 list).
