Freezone company formation in dubai

Freezone company formation in Dubai: what nomads and remote founders should know

Hi everyone,

I help entrepreneurs and remote workers set up companies in the UAE. I’ve just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself by sharing the questions I get asked most about freezone setups in Dubai.

Why people choose a freezone

  • 100% foreign ownership, with no local sponsor needed
  • Full repatriation of profits
  • Setup that can be done largely remotely, depending on the zone
  • A company license that can support your own residence visa

Freezone vs mainland
A freezone license is generally meant for operating from the zone or trading internationally. To serve clients directly inside the UAE market, you usually need a mainland license, a distributor, or a dual license arrangement. The rules differ by zone, so decide who your customers are before choosing a zone.

Things to check before you pick a zone

  • Whether your business activity is permitted in that zone
  • Visa quotas and the cost per visa
  • Office requirements (flexi-desk or physical office)
  • Renewal fees, not just the first-year price
  • Banking: opening a corporate account has become more document-heavy, so prepare for it early
  • Tax: the UAE has a corporate tax regime, and the 0% rate applies only to qualifying freezone income. Your structure and activity matter, so get proper tax advice.

Typical process

  1. Choose your activity and trade name
  2. Pick a zone and package
  3. Submit documents (passport copies, application forms, proof of address)
  4. Receive your license and establishment card
  5. Apply for visas, Emirates ID and a bank account

Costs and timelines vary by zone and activity, so I’d rather give a quote based on your situation than quote figures here that may be out of date.

I’m working with you first me, a Dubai-based formation and business setup consultancy. We’re opening this up gradually and happy to answer questions here, whether or not you end up working with us. If you’re comparing zones, feel free to post your business type and I’ll tell you what I’d look at.
