For cash fares, most frequent-flying nomads start with Google Flights or Skyscanner, set price alerts, and use ITA Matrix for complex routings. All are free, and none sells tickets: you book with the airline or an agent. For points and miles, award search tools such as point.me, Roame and seats.aero search availability across programmes; their paid tiers cost roughly $110 to $300 a year where we could confirm the price. Separately, check onward-ticket rules before you fly one way.

In short:
- Google Flights, Skyscanner and KAYAK are free and send price alerts. ITA Matrix is free for advanced searches but you can’t book through it.
- Award search: point.me Standard is $129 a year (shown as a discount from $239), Roame’s paid plan is $109.99 a year, and seats.aero has a free tier plus a paid Pro tier whose price we couldn’t confirm from its site.
- Countries such as Thailand and the Philippines may ask for proof of onward or return travel, and airlines may check it at check-in.

Cash fares: a workflow that works
- Search flexible dates on Google Flights to find the cheap window.
- Cross-check on Skyscanner or KAYAK, which include more online travel agents. A cheaper agent fare can mean harder changes and refunds.
- For multi-city trips or specific fare classes, build it in ITA Matrix, then book with the airline.
- Set alerts on two tools. Neither Google nor KAYAK guarantees a price; KAYAK says its alerts “won’t make purchases on your behalf.”
Award tools
Award tools are worth paying for only if you hold transferable points or airline miles in meaningful volume. Compare free tiers first. point.me’s free tier searches 60 days out; Roame’s free SkyView window is 7 days. Paid tiers mostly buy a longer search window and more alerts. Treat them as discovery tools: availability can disappear between search and booking, so confirm the seat with the airline before you transfer points.
Onward tickets
Immigration officers and airlines may ask for proof you will leave. The UK government says Thailand may ask for “evidence of onward or return travel” and that British nationals have been refused entry without it. For the Philippines it says most UK visitors are expected to have proof of onward travel and “immigration officials and airlines may ask for this.”
Options members use:
- A real refundable or cheap onward ticket you can use or cancel.
- Rental onward-ticket services that sell a short-lived flight reservation for a fee. These exist and are widely used, but whether a reservation you don’t intend to keep satisfies a given country’s rules is a grey area. An officer may not accept it, and you carry the risk of refused boarding or entry. We don’t link to these services.
Airline status vs alliances
Star Alliance has 28 member airlines; oneworld and SkyTeam are the other two global alliances. Each alliance publishes its own status tiers and the benefits partner airlines recognise, so check those pages rather than assuming lounge or baggage perks carry over to every partner. For a nomad, status that works across an alliance is usually worth more than status with one airline you rarely fly. Pick the alliance that serves your regular hubs, then credit flights to the partner programme where status is easiest to earn.
How to choose
- Mostly cash fares: Google Flights plus one comparison site, both with alerts. Free.
- Complex or multi-city routes: add ITA Matrix.
- Large points balances: trial the free tiers of point.me, Roame and seats.aero, then pay for the one that finds your routes.
- One-way travellers: sort out your onward-travel proof before you reach the airport.

Quick answers
Q: Can you book flights on ITA Matrix?
No. ITA Matrix, owned by Google, is a search tool only. It’s useful for routing codes, specific flight numbers, fare classes and connection airports. Once you find an itinerary, you book it with the airline or a travel agent, matching the flights and fare basis exactly.
Q: Do I need an onward ticket to fly to Thailand?
You may be asked for one. The UK government’s travel advice says Thai immigration can ask for evidence of onward or return travel, plus funds of at least 10,000 baht per person, and that British nationals have been refused entry without it. Airlines may also check before boarding.
Q: Is point.me or Roame worth paying for?
Only if you hold a meaningful points balance. Both have free tiers: point.me searches 60 days ahead and Roame offers a 7-day SkyView window. Paid plans, from $129 a year for point.me Standard and $109.99 for Roame, mainly add a longer search window and alerts.
