Cost of living in Bali for digital nomads (2026): Canggu rent, visas and areas

Last checked: September 2026. USD conversions use the 30 September 2026 rate (1 USD = about 17,950 IDR) and are rounded.

In short:

  • A comfortable single professional in Canggu should budget roughly Rp17.6m-29.3m a month (about $980-1,630), though villas with a pool often cost more than the island-wide rent average.
  • Indonesia’s E33G Remote Worker visa allows a stay of up to one year for people working for employers or clients outside Indonesia, with a minimum income of USD 60,000 a year.
  • Indonesia’s median internet speeds were about 46 Mbps fixed broadband and 62 Mbps mobile in March 2026, so ask for a speed test screenshot before booking in Canggu.

The short verdict

Canggu suits people who want surf, gyms, good cafes and a large, sociable remote-work crowd, and who can live with a slower pace of admin. It suits people less well if they need fast, dependable internet everywhere, dislike traffic, or want to feel they are in a “real” Indonesian town. It also has a proper remote-worker visa, but the income bar is high.

Visa options for remote workers

  • Visa on Arrival (VoA / e-VOA): 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days at an immigration office in Indonesia. You can apply online at least a week before you travel (UK FCDO). The FCDO notes that the VoA “is not suitable for all business activities… influencer work, or creating commercial online content”. Before arrival, complete the All Indonesia arrival card and pay Bali’s tourist levy of IDR 150,000.
  • E33G Remote Worker visa (KITAS): a stay permit of up to one year for people working for employers or clients outside Indonesia, with a minimum income of USD 60,000 a year. EY’s April 2024 tax alert also lists a bank balance of at least USD 2,000 over the previous three months. Sources differ on renewal: EY describes a possible one-year renewal, while visa agent Emerhub says you reapply rather than extend. Confirm with Indonesian Immigration or a licensed agent before you plan beyond 12 months. You cannot work for Indonesian companies on it.

Monthly budget

A comfortable single professional, 1-bed villa or apartment, working from a coworking space.

Item IDR / month Approx USD Source
1-bed villa/apartment Rp10.6m-17.5m $590-980 Numbeo (Bali-wide): Rp10.6m outside centre, Rp17.5m centre (Sept 2026)
Utilities + home internet ~Rp1.8m ~$100 Numbeo: Rp1.46m utilities (larger home basis) + Rp333k broadband
Coworking Rp1.5m-2.0m $85-110 Honeycombers (Aug 2026): Tropical Nomad about Rp1.5m, Puco Rooftop from Rp2.0m
Eating out Rp2.1m-3.6m $115-200 Our estimate from Numbeo prices (Rp50k cheap meal, Rp528k mid-range for two)
Transport Rp0.5m-1.2m $25-65 Rough: from Numbeo taxi tariffs; most people rent a scooter or use Grab/Gojek, and we found no reliable published rate
Health insurance Rp1.1m-3.2m $63-178 SafetyWing Nomad Insurance, ages 18-39 (Essential to Complete)
Rough total Rp17.6m-29.3m $980-1,630

A big caveat: Numbeo has no separate Canggu page, and its Bali data comes from only 38 contributors over 12 months. Canggu villas with a pool, which many nomads choose, often cost more than the island-wide average. Treat the rent line as the floor, and check live listings for your dates.

Neighbourhoods

  • Berawa: gyms, beach clubs, cafes and newer villas. It is the most polished part of Canggu and is priced to match.
  • Batu Bolong / Echo Beach: the original Canggu strip. It is close to surf and nightlife and has the most traffic.
  • Pererenan: just west, quieter and a bit greener, with more space for the money. Tribal Bali is here.
  • Umalas / Kerobokan: more residential, with better access towards Seminyak and the airport. Good for longer stays.

Internet and coworking

Indonesia’s national median speeds are modest: about 46 Mbps fixed broadband and 62 Mbps mobile in March 2026 (Ookla Speedtest Global Index, as compiled on Wikipedia). Canggu’s better villas and coworking spaces usually beat that, but ask for a speed test screenshot before booking. Keep a local SIM with data as backup.

Spaces we checked are operating:

  • Tropical Nomad, Jl. Subak Canggu No.2. Open 24 hours to members, with dedicated desks and packages for night-shift workers.
  • Tribal Bali, Jl. Pantai Pererenan. A coworking hostel with a cafe; contact them for rates.

Outpost’s website now lists only Ubud locations in Bali, not Canggu.

Safety and annoyances

  • Traffic and scooters: the UK FCDO reports “a large increase in moped and motorbike accidents – some fatal – in Bali”. Wear a helmet, and check that your insurance covers scooter use and that you hold the right licence.
  • Drinks: the FCDO says methanol poisoning cases have come from drinks bought in licensed bars, shops and hotels in tourist areas. It also reports drink spiking linked to sexual assault. Stick to sealed, branded drinks.
  • “Bali belly”: the FCDO states that “tap water is not safe to drink in Indonesia”. Use filtered or bottled water, including for brushing teeth if your stomach is sensitive.
  • Rabies: the FCDO notes many street dogs, and monkeys around temples. Bali’s provincial government says rabies has been a problem since 2008. After any bite or scratch, wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and get post-exposure treatment the same day. Consider pre-exposure vaccination before you go.
  • Petty crime and scams: the FCDO reports bag-snatching and scams at tattoo parlours, nail salons and spas.
  • Local rules: police often raid venues popular with foreigners. On Nyepi, the island stops for a day and everyone stays indoors.

Tax note

Indonesia treats you as tax resident if you are present for more than 183 days in any 12-month period, or if you are there during a tax year and intend to reside (PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries). Emerhub goes further and says E33G holders are treated as tax resident regardless of days. That is one agent’s reading, so get professional advice before relying on either view.

Best time to go

Weather Spark data for Denpasar shows a drier season from late March to early November, with August the driest month. The wetter season runs from November to March, and January averages about 26 cm (10.3 in) of rain. Temperatures barely change across the year (about 23-32°C, or 74-89°F), and it feels humid year-round. Our pick is May to September, accepting that July-August is also peak holiday season, when prices and traffic are at their worst.
