Bank account closures tracker (2026): which banks close on nomads

This is the Nomad Forums bank account closures tracker: member reports of banks, fintechs and brokers that closed or restricted an account because the owner moved abroad, travelled a lot, or changed tax residence. It records which institution, what triggered it, how much notice was given and whether the money came back without trouble.

Started: October 2026. Updated monthly from replies in this thread.

In short:

  • Reply with the bank or fintech, your country of residence and tax residence at the time, what triggered the closure, and how much notice you got, using the template below.
  • Each month we summarise the reports at the top of this post: the most-reported institutions, the most common triggers, and typical notice periods.
  • Reports are anonymous: no account numbers, names or screenshots with personal details, and we don’t name individual staff.

Ground rules

  • Only report your own experience. Second-hand stories go in a normal reply, clearly labelled.
  • Banks can’t discuss individual cases publicly, so we don’t treat a single report as proof of a policy. We publish an institution only once there are 3 independent reports.
  • No account numbers, sort codes, IBANs, case references or personal screenshots. Moderators will edit them out.
  • Representatives of banks and fintechs are welcome to reply with their official policy, clearly identified.

Why this matters

Banks are required to know where their customers live and are tax resident. When that changes or looks unclear, closures often follow, and the stated reason is usually brief. The guides below explain the rules; this thread shows what’s actually happening to members.

Background: Why banks close digital nomads’ accounts, and which are safer bets · Wise vs Revolut for digital nomads: fees, limits and when you need a local bank · Offshore bank account (2026): what’s legal, costs, where to open · Wise Business account review (2026): fees, eligibility and risks

Quick answers

Q: Why do banks close accounts when you move abroad?
Banks must keep up-to-date information on where customers live and are tax resident, and some won’t serve residents of certain countries. A foreign address, a missing tax residence certificate or unusual account activity can trigger a review. This tracker records which triggers members actually report, institution by institution.

Q: How do I report a bank account closure here?
Reply to this thread with the template: the institution, account type, where you lived and were tax resident, what happened, the stated trigger, the notice period and whether your money came back. Leave out account numbers, names and screenshots with personal details.

Q: When does an institution appear in the tracker summary?
Once there are at least 3 independent reports about the same bank, fintech or broker. One report on its own can’t show a policy, so single cases stay in the thread until others confirm a pattern. The summary is updated monthly.

This is general information from the Nomad Forums team, not financial or legal advice. Bank policies change; check directly with your bank before relying on any account.

Over to you: Had an account closed, frozen or restricted after moving abroad? Post it with the template, including what you switched to and whether it has held up since.
