Virtual mailbox services for nomads (2026): prices and what banks accept

A virtual mailbox gives you a street address where your post is received, scanned and forwarded while you travel. In the US, plans start at about $5 to $15 a month (Anytime Mailbox, PhysicalAddress, iPostal1, Traveling Mailbox), and business-focused services cost $39 to $49 a month or more. The catch: a virtual address is not a home address, and many banks and some state DMVs won’t accept one.

In short:

  • Cheapest US options we found start at $4.99 a month (Anytime Mailbox, some locations) and $7.98 a month (PhysicalAddress Plan 30); UK Postbox offers a free Dorset PO box with pay-as-you-go charges.
  • Every US virtual mailbox is a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA), so you must sign USPS Form 1583, which since 1 May 2024 can be witnessed over live video by the CMRA or a US-commissioned notary.
  • Banks must collect a residential or business street address, so a CMRA address often fails bank and DMV checks; full-time travellers usually use a domicile service in South Dakota, Texas or Florida instead.

What a CMRA address means

A US private mailbox provider is a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA). Before it can receive your post, you must complete USPS PS Form 1583. Since 1 May 2024 you can sign in the virtual (live audio and video) presence of the CMRA, or before a notary commissioned in a US state or territory. The address looks like a street address with a suite or PMB number, but banks and agencies can often identify it as a CMRA.

The big caveat: banks and DMVs

Banks. US customer identification rules require a bank to collect, for an individual, “a residential or business street address” (or, if you have none, an APO/FPO address or the street address of next of kin or another contact). Many banks read that as excluding virtual mailboxes. Capital One’s 360 Performance Savings, for example, requires “a U.S. physical address.” Mercury and Relay reject virtual mail services outright. See Banks that accept non-US and non-resident addresses (2026): member list.

DMVs. Each state has its own rules. South Dakota’s Department of Public Safety has a route for full-time travellers that accepts a mail-forwarding (PMB) address if you bring a receipt for one night’s stay in South Dakota in the last year and a notarised residency affidavit. Escapees’ Florida guide says you need two proofs of residential address and uses an RV-park address through its “Escapees: Home” service. Texas, Florida and South Dakota are the usual domicile states for full-timers, which is why Escapees and St Brendan’s Isle exist. Your domicile also decides state income tax and where you vote; if you are leaving the US for good, read How to leave the US (2026): a checklist for moving out of the US and US expat taxes (2026): filing, FEIE, FBAR and catching up first.

How to choose

  • You only need post scanned: a cheap per-location plan (Anytime Mailbox, PhysicalAddress, iPostal1). Check scan allowances.
  • You need a domicile, licence and voter registration: use a domicile-state service (Escapees, St Brendan’s Isle) and follow that state’s DMV rules.
  • You run a US LLC: a virtual business address is fine for post, but banks such as Mercury and Relay want a physical operating address. See Wyoming LLC for non-US residents: Form 5472, banking and tax (2026).
  • You get cheques: compare check-deposit fees (free at US Global Mail; $4.95 at Traveling Mailbox).

Quick answers

Q: What is the cheapest virtual mailbox in the US?
On 6 October 2026, Anytime Mailbox advertised plans from $4.99 a month and PhysicalAddress from $7.98 a month for its Plan 30. Prices vary by address location, and scan limits differ, so compare the total cost of the scans and forwarding you will actually use, not only the headline plan.

Q: Can I use a virtual mailbox address to open a US bank account?
Often not. Federal rules require banks to collect a residential or business street address for individuals, and many banks reject CMRA addresses. Capital One requires a US physical address, while Mercury and Relay explicitly refuse virtual mail services. Some banks accept them as a mailing address alongside a real residential address.

Q: Do I need to get Form 1583 notarised in person?
No. Since 1 May 2024 the USPS lets you sign PS Form 1583 in the virtual presence of the mailbox provider over live audio and video, or before a notary commissioned in a US state or territory, which can be done online. iPostal1, for example, offers an online notary for $25.
